Quotes Angie M

"They were arranged by their original numbers, the numbers they had been given at birth. The numbers were rarely used after the Naming. But each child knew his number, of course. Sometimes parents used them in irritation at a child's misbehavior, indicating that mischief made one unworthy of a name." Page 50

This quote shows the view of everyone in the community when it comes to mischief. It also describes how the children used to have no names at first, but were eventually worthy of receiving a name.

"But today we honor your differences. They have determined your futures." Page 52

This quote is significant because it was the time the Elevens finally become adults. All of their individual skills get recognized for the first time, which decided which assignment each of them receives.

"When he began to talk again, it was with greater precision. And now his lapses are very few. His corrections and apologies are very prompt. And his good humor is unfailing." Page 55

This quote shows how Asher is finally able to learn from his mistakes and become disciplined, and means he has finally become an adult. It also shows growth within him, and allows him to receive his assignment as a result.

"He hunched his shoulders and tried to make himself smaller in the seat. He wanted to disappear, to fade away, not to exist. He didn't dare to turn and find his parents in the crowd. He couldn't bear to see their faces darkened with shame." Page 58

This quote shows how much it mattered to Jonas about whether or not he gets an assignment. It also shows how much he cared about not disappointing other people who were expecting him to be getting an assignment.

"Jonas bowed his head and searched through his mind. What had he done wrong?" Page 58

This quote shows how worried Jonas is about the mistakes he may have done in his life up until now. It may also mean that Jonas may have made a serious mistake at some point, and was hiding it from everyone all this time.
