Quoter Peter Kwok section 4

1.Page 179

Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.

The significance of this quote is that he heard something coming from where he had came from and possibly the people back at home and indicates that he really did have the capacity to see beyond. The giver was right and Jonas changed

2. Page 164

"Enjoy it, little guy," he said. "This is your last night as visitor."

This quote shows that Jonas' dad wanted to release Gabe. Jonas knows the truth behind releasing people and that is really killing the people.

3. Page 176

The memories had fallen behind him now, escaping from his protection to return to the people of his community.

Jonas' plan worked but it cost him a lot of sacrifice but it show is he did what was best for the community

4. Page 173

The word had been "starving." You have never been starving, he had been told. You will never be starving.

Jonas now knows what starving means and even though his mom told him presision of language he really means it now.

5. page 174

He no longer cared about himself.

This quote shows that Jonas has changed, grown, and now possesses feelings. He has learned things no one else has and it is all because  of the giver.

Character Commandant - Angie M

1. Jonas was horrified when he found out what the newchild's release really means, and refuses to go home to his family. Pg 152. The Giver explains to Jonas that the people in the community cannot feel the same things he does, and helps him in his plan to escape from the community. Pg 158.

2. Jonas and Gabriel finally escaped the community, and had to hide from the planes that were looking for them. Since the planes use heat seeking to look for them, Jonas gave a memory of the coldest thing he could think of to Gabriel. This made both of their temperatures cold enough to not be sensed by the planes. Pg. 169.

3. Along the way to Elsewhere, Jonas and Gabriel experienced new things. They saw flying birds for the first time, which they had thought were planes at first. They also got to see other animals, such as deer and foxes. They also saw many new types of plants that they had not seen before. Pg. 172.

4. Jonas lost most of the memories given to him by the Giver, but he was able to remember the warm feeling of sunshine. Using this, he transmits the memory to Gabriel, and they were both able to make it up the snow covered hill, even though they were very cold and hungry. pg 176-177.

5. Jonas and Gabriel ride down the hill on a sled they found, and see lots of houses. Jonas was sure there were families with memories and love inside those houses, and that they were waiting for him and the newchild. Finally, hears music for the first time. Pg 179-180.

In chapters 19-23 in the book The Giver reminds me of a time when I watched the  movie The Hunger Games. In the movie there are 12 districts and they are all controlled by one small group of people. Everything in the movie is controlled juts like in the Giver.

In the book the giver and the movie The hunger games there are people trying to rebel against the people controlling the community. What both rebellion groups all they want is change in the way they govern the community.

Mood Maven- Vernadette U.

pg.152
"He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realizing. He continued to stare at the screen numbly."

In this paragraph, the tone and the mood can be described as shocking  because no ever expected that to happen during releases and I also think this is the most important part of the story because if the Giver hadn't pulled out the video of the part where Jonas father release the twins, escaping from the community wouldn't have even crossed his mind.

pg.152
"What about you? Do you lie to me, too?" Jonas almost spat the
question at The Giver.
"I am empowered to lie. But I have never lied to you."

The tone and the mood can be described as angry and also a little bit of a betrayal because Jonas thinks that the Giver have lied to him before because of they have the power to do so.

pg.164
“He felt, surprisingly, no fear, nor any regret at leaving the community behind. But he felt a very deep sadness that he had left his closest friend behind. He knew that in the danger of his escape he must be absolutely silent; but with his heart and mind, he called back and hoped that with his capacity for hearing-beyond, The Giver would know that Jonas had said goodbye.”

The tone and mood is a bit sad because Jonas plans to leave everything behind him and also a sense of nervousness because if Jonas gets caught while his trying to flee its all over for him.

pg.169
"But when the planes came, he wished that he could have received the courage. He knew they were search planes. They flew so low that they woke him with the noise of their engines, and sometimes, looking out and up fearfully from the hiding places, he could almost see the faces of the searchers."
The tone and the mood can be describes as suspenseful and it also has an anxious feel to it because of the fact that they might get caught by the guards and be forced to return to the community and face some consequences.

pg. 179

“Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.”
The tone and mood of this paragraph can be describe as suspenseful and it also leaves a cliffhanger with the last sentence because when Jonas realized that its just an echo people would want to know what will happen next.

97-98

Jonas began to see glimpse of colors in his ordinary life. There would be glimpse of green in the landscape and other brilliant colors. Since Jonas is the only one that can see colors, Jonas feels irritated because everything is the same and dull in the community. He thinks that its unfair that people can't choose what they want to do in their everyday lives because its all so similar.

101

In this page Jonas was trying to explain to his little sister Lily that her comfort object which is an elephant used to exist along with some other creatures. Lily agrees with him skeptically Jonas then tries to transmit some of the memories of an elephant to her buy touching her shoulders not realizing that he's been hurting her just so he can prove a point.

116-117

In this pages Jonas noticed that his parents weren't getting enough sleep because of the new child Gabriel that his father nurtures at home for extra care. During the middle of the night, Gabriel would wake Jonas up because of the noise he makes from his relentless sleep.

Jonas then began to remember the wonderful sail that the Giver had given him while patting Gabriel back not being aware that his transmitting some of that memory to the new child. Feeling frightened of his power he decided not to tell the Giver about the incident.

130

In this page it describes what Jonas was feeling because of the fact that he hasn't been taking his pills for the past week or so. He feels a little guilty and embarrassed about the dreams that he's been having but he knows that he can't take anymore stirring pills and that he couldn't go back to the world of no feelings that he had lived for so long.

139-140

In this pages Jonas starts to question himself as to why he was chosen for this job. He then asks some questions regarding about the previous receiver and why it was unsuccessful. The Giver then gives some explanations to Jonas stating that the previous receiver wasn't ready to handle memories that were too painful. After hearing the story, Jonas is now more determined to work hard to be a better Receiver.

Page 108-109

"Jonas was jarred loose and thrown violently into the air. He fell with his leg twisted under him, and could hear the crack of the bone. His face scraped along jagged edges of ice and when he came, at last, to a stop, he lay shocked and still feeling nothing at fist but fear. Then the first wave of pain."

I choose this quote from the story because this is Jonas first experience of pain. From this experience Jonas was asking for pills the relive the pain. The Giver imminently said no. Now I think from this experience Jonas will second guess his section of being the receiver of memories.

Page 129

"The next morning for the first time, Jonas did not take the pill. Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away."

I think from the memories of love and pain Jonas does not think he needs he needs the pills. Maybe they might affect his memories.

Page 134

"Don't play it anymore Jonas pleaded"

From the memories that Jonas has he realizes the true meaning behind the game. Since nobody else has the memories nobody else knows any better. Nobody knows pain and hardship.

Page 121

"Jonas did not want to go back. he didn't want the memories didn't the wisdom didn't want the pain"

From the memory of war and pain that The Giver gave him the last time. From that memory Jonas doesn't want to be The Giver.

Page 101

"Jonas asked once, as they prepared for the day's work, don't you have a spouse? Aren't you allowed to apply for one?"

I think Jonas asked The giver this because Jonas might be worried he can't have a life being The Giver.

Illustrator Peter Kwok section 3

My picture is about the transmitting of love. When Jonas is given the memory of love he feels good inside.

In the picture Jonas is watching people open presents and they are happy. He wants to feel the same way and likes the memory and thought of love. Jonas wants there to be love in the world again but he can't make people understand the concept of love.

Question Creator - Angie M

1. How does being able to see a color change Jonas' life?

It made him aware that he is different from the others, who cannot see any colours. It also brought vibrance into his world, and made him get really angry when he sees other people satisfied with their lives without any color, and he could not change it for them.

2. How did pain change Jonas' life?

Jonas never knew that such pain existed before, The giver explained that experiencing pain gives wisdom to a person. Since the rest of the community did not know of any pain, this makes Jonas become different from the rest, and allowed Jonas to have more experiences than everyone else.

3. Why did Jonas' sister not believe his story of the elephants?

She did not believe that elephants existed, since she was not given the memory of the elephants being killed for their tusks, like Jonas was. He was the only person to claim that elephants once existed, so it was natural that nobody believed what he said.

4. Why did Jonas tell his first lie to his parents?

Since Jonas had memories given to him by the Giver, and has had many experiences taught to him, he is now wiser than his parents were. However, his parents were unable to understand why he asked if they "love" him, and tried to explain to him that it was wrong to ask a question like that. He ended up having to lie that he understood his parents' explanation.

5. Why was it important for Jonas to understand the joy of being an individual?

Jonas had always been worried over the fact that he was different from others, such as having lighter coloured eyes, and being able to see the color red. Everyone in the community embraces "sameness", which caused Jonas want everyone to be able to see what he sees. Now that he learned the joy of being an individual, he is able to experience happiness.

Mood Maven (Riley Tanner)

I honestly believe that this section of this story is the most important one of them all. The mood of this story is quite stressed in some parts and other very calming. This can be showed by this quote,"No. Asher admitted reluctantly."But you can .It says so in the rules." (page 48),  "It's not what is in the heart, its what is in the mind".

Character Commandant Peter Kwok Section 2

Page 57

In this page of the book Jonas is about to be called up to receive his job but instead the Chief Elder skips his number and calls number 20 instead of 19. Jonas was stunned! He thought that he may have forgot his number and he was doubting himself as everyone else was confused. He thought maybe the Chief Elder had made a mistake. Everyone was confused of why the Chief Elder would have skipped Jonas. Jonas seemed more worried every time they called the next number and it wasn't him. He felt alone and isolated from the others.

Page 69

In this page Jonas is learning his rules to follow as the RECEIVER OF MEMORY he is confused about some of the rules such as lying. He was taught not to lie when he was a kid so now the rules are much different. Jonas feels isolated from the the rest and he doesn't want to feel that way.

Page 71

Jonas is still haunted by the thought that he can lie and that no one else lies but him. He wants to know why he is allowed to lie and has so many questions he wants answered by the giver. Everyone else seems to have something in common and he is left out. He can do things no one else can and I think that Jonas doesn't know if he should do some of those things. The questions he wants the giver to answer, he doesn't even know if it will be true.

Page 80

In this page Jonas is being transmitted the memory of snow by the giver and he tries to relax and he is afraid he will fall asleep. He feels cold and he can see his breath. Suddenly the givers hands seem to fade and he is left in the cold where he sees a sled and a hill. Snowflakes are falling and he catches them on his tongue. He learns what snow is.

Page 86

Jonas wants to know what the pain will be in his job. The giver transmits the memory of sunburn to him. Jonas felt warm at first but soon it started to burn. He cried in pain and soon woke up again. The giver told him that it was sun burn. Jonas finally understands what the pain would feel like and thanks the giver.

Illustration - Angie M

This apple can symbolize anything really, but in this book this generic apple represents the point in which Jonas realizes that something in this world has "changed".

The apple is grey because in the book, Jonas was playing catch with Asher using an apple, the apple changed into what looked like a ball. I think it foreshadows the appearance of more knowledge in his life.

Question Creator Cole Cabral

Questions

1.  Why do you think Jonas became the receiver of memories?

2.  Why did the community react to Jonas receiving his job as receiver of memories as they did?

3.  Why do you think the community only has one person that holds all the memories?
4.  Do you think that Jonas will follow all the rules he was given and why?

5.  Why do think the elders skip Jonas during the selection?

Possible Answers

1.  I think Jonas was picked to be the receiver of memories because Jonas has the qualities that the receiver of memories needs. Jonas also didn't fit in all places in the community.

2.  The community reacted in the way they did because they all believe in  Jonas and all of his skills that he possess.

3.  Why I think the community only has one person that has all the memories is because they want everybody doing the same thing and thinking the same thing. If everybody does that nobody will retaliate against them.

4.  I think Jonas will follow the rules because he doesn't want to upset anyone. Or cause anyone pain

5.  I think the elders skipped Jonas in the selection because she wanted them to remember Jonas's selection because that kind of selection doesn't happen all the time.

Section 2: Chapters 6-12

The image represents the Elevens turning to Twelves or in other words their "adulthood". It symbolizes the fact that their childhood is over and their ready to transition from a child to an adult.

The image shows a handshake with a caption "Thank you for your childhood," it illustrates the head chief giving everyone a handshake after announcing their jobs in the community.

This handshake also emphases the part were Jonah was the last one to receive his job and the most important job of all "The Receiver"

Quotes Angie M

"They were arranged by their original numbers, the numbers they had been given at birth. The numbers were rarely used after the Naming. But each child knew his number, of course. Sometimes parents used them in irritation at a child's misbehavior, indicating that mischief made one unworthy of a name." Page 50

This quote shows the view of everyone in the community when it comes to mischief. It also describes how the children used to have no names at first, but were eventually worthy of receiving a name.

"But today we honor your differences. They have determined your futures." Page 52

This quote is significant because it was the time the Elevens finally become adults. All of their individual skills get recognized for the first time, which decided which assignment each of them receives.

"When he began to talk again, it was with greater precision. And now his lapses are very few. His corrections and apologies are very prompt. And his good humor is unfailing." Page 55

This quote shows how Asher is finally able to learn from his mistakes and become disciplined, and means he has finally become an adult. It also shows growth within him, and allows him to receive his assignment as a result.

"He hunched his shoulders and tried to make himself smaller in the seat. He wanted to disappear, to fade away, not to exist. He didn't dare to turn and find his parents in the crowd. He couldn't bear to see their faces darkened with shame." Page 58

This quote shows how much it mattered to Jonas about whether or not he gets an assignment. It also shows how much he cared about not disappointing other people who were expecting him to be getting an assignment.

"Jonas bowed his head and searched through his mind. What had he done wrong?" Page 58

This quote shows how worried Jonas is about the mistakes he may have done in his life up until now. It may also mean that Jonas may have made a serious mistake at some point, and was hiding it from everyone all this time.

Character Commandant Cole Cabral

Page 1

In this page of the story we are introduced to the main character Jonas. In the part it says the he is frightened. Then Jonas thought the that word was too deep maybe more sickening feeling or something more terrible. From this we can infer that Jonas might be worried about something that is coming up. Then it tells a little bit when Jonas felt like this before and it was when an aircraft flew very close to the community. Aircraft's were not supposed to fly that close they were only to be close when dropping supplies off. whenever these aircraft's drops stuff off Jonas runs to the fence to watch. When the aircraft that flew so close to the community everybody waited for an explanation from the announcer.

 Pages 12-13

In these pages of the story Jonas is eating supper with is family, and at the dinner table the family is supposed to express their feelings. Jonas sister says that she was angry today because younger kids came to visit and they didn't know the rules. Then is goes into how the parents help her resolve her issue. Then it goes into Jonas feelings. Jonas says he feels apprehensive because of the ceremony of the twelve. He feels this way because the elders pick what you do for the rest of your life, and Jonas doesn't want to get a job that he wont like.

Pages 30 31

In this part of the story Jonas is going to to the center where they bathe the elderly. I think Jonas like going there because its a chance to relax from everything that's going on, and he like the trust that the elderly show when they are getting bathed. There is also a character named Fiona and Jonas has feelings towards Fiona. I think from has feelings like this might affect the decisions he makes and things he does.

Pages 24-25

In These pages of the story Jonas and his best friend Asher are playing toss with an apple. As they are playing when the apple is tossed into mid air Jonas notices the apple change into a ball. After he sees that he asked Asher and he doesn't see that. After this experience Jonas is even more apprehensive.

Pages 26-27

In this part of the story Jonas is talking about his childhood and how life is where is lives. Everything there is controlled and is perfect nothing strange happens and everything is perfect. I think that is a very wired way to live your life. Having everything controlled for you would be very different. From having a life like this Jonas has become very boring and stale.

Question Creator Peter Kwok Section 1

Questions to Ponder

 1. What do you think Jonas saw the apple change into while the boys were playing catch?

 2. Why do you think Jonas and all the people that have a “stirring” have to take pills?

 3. What do you think will happen to Gabriel?

 4. What job would Jonas fit in the most?

 5. Why does Fiona appear in Jonas stirring?

Answers

 1. I think Jonas saw the apple change into a red ball. I think that because only Jonas noticed it but no one else. That could mean that it was too small a change to be noticed and therefore could have changed into a red ball.

 2. I think the pills make it so that you have no feelings for anything because he wanted to bathe Fiona so he had feelings for her. The pills probably blocks all of that.

 3. I think he may be released because he isn't growing and doesn't sleep well. He may not be healthy and therefore be released by the father.

 4. I think Jonas could easily be one of the people that bathe the elders. He has lots of experience and knows what to do already. He would start working immediately.

 5. Jonas likes Fiona and I guess wants to spend more time with her. The stirring may mean he is going through puberty and is starting to like girls.

Quotes from The Giver (Riley Tanner)

                                                                  Section 1 Quotes

-”Frightened was the way he felt a year ago”.

  • He felt the fear because of the stirring. He liked the stirring in his presence but he was afraid of it like it was a ghost or something.

-”Jonas watched as he poured a fresh cup of coffee”.

  • He was memorized by the pouring of the coffee. The way he poured the cup of coffee brought back memories to him .

-”Rules were hard to change sometimes if it was a very important rule”.

  • Rules where set for a reason and they were not meant to be changed but if it is a corrupt rule then it must be changed.

-”How long will i have to take them? All of your adult life, but it becomes a routine after a while”.

  • He doesn't want to do this all his life and he never wants it back if it goes away. He never liked the stirring at certain times.

-”He remembered upon waking he wanted to feel the stirrings again”.

  • Even though he felt fear he liked the stirring. Jonas overcomes the fear of the stirring at points then just crumbled at others.

-”Sometimes he awoke with a feeling of fragments afloat in his sleep, but he couldn't seem to grasp them and put them together”.

  • This quote is showing what can happen if you don't act fast with your surroundings. Or if your just not aware on what is going on at that moment. Aswell if your not focused enough to think or see then you need to wake up before you become to immersed in your dream.

-”Can you describe the strongest feeling in your dream son? The Father asked”.

  • This is showing that is father cares about him and doesn't want him hurt

Section 2 Quotes
" There are good things each year".

  • I chose this quote because it resembles the meaning of a new year. New Year makes a New Person.

" We are convinced that Jonas has the ability to acquire wisdom".

  • I chose this quote because of how someone thinks what someone knows. But Jonas can't acquire wisdom because he as never been taught it before but now he has learned how to use wisdom.

"Everything is different, even the nameplates on our bikes".

  • This one was a hard quote to pick because things haven't really changed much unless Jonas is talking about a new year the yes, alot has changed.

Chapters 1-6 of the book "The Giver" reminds me of the time that I watched a documentary about North Korea.

The reason why it reminds me of North Korea because the book describes how the village is full of bicycles and how everything is governed and controlled by strange laws.

North Korean citizens also travel by bicycles to get to their destinations and as for the government system, I think everyone knows how North Korea is governed and controlled by a "superior leader" with strict laws to control the whole country.
